Notepad++is my favourite notebook and editor is actually perfect, but it can always be better. For this reason, there are a few “quality of life” improvements that I use over the add-ons that are the Notepad++ my most important AddOns.
AutoSave
AutoSave saves the open files automatically. This can also be customised via a menu.
Save as Admin
From the Notepad++ most important AddOns list, this is the most important add-ons for me. Because I often made changes to system and hosts files and this is only possible if you have already started notepad or notepad++ as administrator.
With Save as Admin, a UAC prompt appears and you can save the changes directly without having to copy & paste and restart the application.
There is a Github Repository for this plugin.
TakeNotes
With TakeNotes you get two “yellow notes” in the menu bar at the top. One for creating new notes and one for opening existing ones. Via Plugins -> Take Notes -> Options you can also store notes in the Documents folder, for example, and thus synchronise them across several systems.
Among the “Notepad++ – The most important add-ons”, this is the one I am currently trying to use the most and organise myself better.
Task List
Task List allows you to enter TODO: in your text file and then notes this entry in a task list on the right-hand side. With a double click on the entry in the task list you can then jump directly to your TODO: note. For me, this is one of the most important add-ons in Notepad++.
NPPOpenAI
With this add-on from my “Notepad++ most important AddOns” you can establish a direct connection to OpenAI / ChatGPT. Developed by Richard Stockinger and can be found via Github. Currently not among the most important add-ons for Notepad, but entertaining and with potential.
To set it up, go to https://platform.openai.com/account/api-keys and log in with your OpenAI account.
With CTRL+Shift+O you can give any marked question to OpenAI and do not have to log in or use the OpenAI web interface.
I had problems especially with UTF-8 characters like äöü, but then I just ask in English.
Here in the blog you can find updates for Notepad++ from time to time. For example, there is finally the menu extension in Explorer for Windows 11. Keep looking for updates to learn more about Notepad++ and my most important AddOns.
Are these all the Notepad++ AddOns we need?
There are even more funny comics to discover on the website https://vincentdnl.com/ and you can support @Vincent Déniel!
